1 BHK Interior Design Cost in Varanasi: Full Breakdown (2026)
Mayank Singh
A 1 BHK is the hardest brief in interiors. You have one bedroom doing the work of three rooms, a kitchen that has to be efficient rather than impressive, and a living space that is also the dining room and often the guest room. Every decision has to earn its floor space.
It is also the brief where quotes vary most wildly, because "doing up a 1 BHK" can mean anything from a kitchen and a wardrobe to a full fit-out with ceilings and loose furniture. Here is what each version actually costs in Varanasi in 2026.
The short answer
For a typical Varanasi 1 BHK of 450 to 650 sq ft:
Scope Total cost What you get Essentials ₹2.2L – ₹3.5L Modular kitchen, one wardrobe, painting Comfortable ₹3.5L – ₹6L Above plus TV unit, false ceiling, lighting, bed Full fit-out ₹6L – ₹10L Above plus premium finishes, study, storage throughout
Most Varanasi 1 BHK projects land in the comfortable band. The essentials band is common for rental units and for owners who plan to do the rest in phases.
Room by room Kitchen — ₹1.1L to ₹2.5L
The single largest line, usually 35 to 45% of the whole budget. A 1 BHK kitchen is typically 7x8 or 8x8, laid out straight or in an L.
Economy build: ₹1.1L – ₹1.5L Mid-range: ₹1.5L – ₹2L Premium: ₹2L – ₹2.5L
What moves the number is the board grade and the hardware, not the size. In a small kitchen the difference between a good carcass and a poor one is only a few thousand rupees of material — and it is the difference between a kitchen that survives fifteen Varanasi monsoons and one that swells at the base in four.
Bedroom wardrobe — ₹55,000 to ₹1.4L
Assume a 6ft wide by 7ft tall wardrobe as standard.
Openable, laminate finish: ₹55,000 – ₹85,000 Sliding, laminate or acrylic: ₹90,000 – ₹1.2L Premium finish with internal accessories: ₹1.2L – ₹1.4L
In a 1 BHK bedroom, sliding doors are usually the right answer — openable shutters need three feet of clearance you probably do not have next to the bed. Add a loft above the wardrobe. In a one-bedroom home, that overhead storage is worth more than anything decorative you could spend the same money on.
TV unit and living storage — ₹25,000 to ₹80,000
A wall-mounted panel with a drawer base runs ₹25,000 to ₹45,000. A full wall unit with display shelving and closed storage runs ₹50,000 to ₹80,000.
In a 1 BHK, choose the version with more closed storage. Open shelving looks better in photographs and collects dust in real life, and you will need somewhere to put things.
False ceiling — ₹15,000 to ₹45,000
Priced at roughly ₹120 to ₹350 per sq ft depending on design complexity and whether it is plain POP or gypsum with cove lighting.
Do the living room only. A false ceiling in a small bedroom eats height you cannot spare, and the room will feel smaller for it.
Painting — ₹25,000 to ₹60,000
The whole flat, two coats. The lower end is standard emulsion; the upper end is a premium washable finish with putty work.
Worth spending slightly up here. Painting is the one job that touches every square foot of the home, and a poor finish shows in every photograph you will ever take of the place.
Beds and loose furniture — ₹35,000 to ₹1.2L
A storage bed is not optional in a 1 BHK — the space under it is the largest single volume of storage in the home.
Storage bed, laminate: ₹35,000 – ₹55,000 Upholstered storage bed: ₹60,000 – ₹90,000 Plus side tables, dresser, seating: ₹30,000 – ₹60,000 Electrical and lighting — ₹25,000 to ₹60,000
New points, switch plates, profile lighting, fixtures. This gets underestimated constantly and it cannot be done later without breaking walls that were just painted.
What to do first when the budget is tight
If you cannot do everything at once, this is the order that costs least in the long run:
Kitchen and electrical. Both involve civil work. Doing them later means undoing finished work. Wardrobe with loft. Storage is the actual problem a 1 BHK has. Solve it early. Painting. Cheap relative to its visual impact, and easy to redo in a few years. False ceiling and lighting. Genuinely transformative, genuinely deferrable. TV unit and loose furniture. Add these once you have lived in the space and know how you use it.
The one thing not to phase is anything requiring a mason or an electrician. Carpentry can come in waves. Civil work should happen once.
Two things specific to Varanasi 1 BHKs
Humidity is the design constraint, not the aesthetic. A small home has less air movement and more concentrated cooking moisture. Whatever board goes into the kitchen and the wardrobe base needs to be rated for it — BWP 710 at minimum. This is not an upsell; it is the difference between furniture that lasts and furniture that fails.
Check the loft ceiling height before you plan. Many older Varanasi flats have generous ceiling heights that make lofts genuinely usable, and many newer ones do not. Measure before anyone draws anything, because a loft you can actually reach changes the entire storage plan.
What to ask before you sign Which board grade, which mill — written on the quote Which hardware brand, and is soft-close included Is painting, electrical and civil work inside or outside the quote What is the timeline, and does the family need to move out Is site measurement done before quoting or after How we work at Homesta
We build from the board up, because Vidya Timber has supplied building materials in Varanasi for years and we select the stock ourselves. Every quote states the board grade, the hardware brand and the exclusions on the front page.
For a 1 BHK, we usually recommend spending the budget on the kitchen, the wardrobe and the storage — and holding back on the decorative work until you have lived there a season. The homes that work best are the ones where the money went into the things people touch every day.
